Waite はソードの3を、三本の剣に貫かれた心臓と背後の雲と雨の図柄とし、正位置の意味として除去、不在、遅延、分裂、断絶、離散など、図柄がそのまま示す事柄を挙げている。逆位置には精神の錯乱、過誤、損失、取り乱し、無秩序、混乱を置いている。
