カップの8 Eight of Cups
Waite はカップの8を、落胆した男が自らの幸福や事業の杯を見捨てて去る図とし、正位置では事柄の衰退、あるいは重要と思われた事柄が実は取るに足りないことを示すとし、喜びや温和など正反対の解釈があることにも触れている。逆位置には大きな喜び、幸福、祝宴を挙げ、追加の意味では色白の女性との結婚と、逆位置に完全な満足を記している。
正位置の意味
このカードは表面上はそれ自体で語っているが、別の解釈はまったく正反対であり、喜び、温和、臆病、名誉、謙虚を与えている。実際には、このカードはたいてい事柄の衰退を示すか、あるいは重要だと思われていた事柄が——良くも悪くも——実はほとんど取るに足りないものであることを示すと分かる。

The card speaks for itself on the surface, but other readings are entirely antithetical—giving joy, mildness, timidity, honour, modesty. In practice, it is usually found that the card shews the decline of a matter, or that a matter which has been thought to be important is really of slight consequence—either for good or evil.
